Methane is both the primary constituent of natural gas and a potent greenhouse gas when released to the atmosphere. Methane emissions from oil and natural gas systems are primarily the result of normal operations, routine maintenance, and system disruptions. These emissions can be cost-effectively reduced by upgrading technologies or equipment, and by improving management practices and operations. Reducing fugitive emissions can reduce product losses, enhance energy security, lower methane emissions, and increase revenues. The Methane to Markets Partnership facilitates cooperative methane leak prevention and mitigation activities that result in bringing more gas to markets.
To learn more, review the background information on the recovery and use of methane from oil and gas systems.
The Oil and Gas Technical Subcommittee in collaboration with Project Network members is leading the Partnership’s efforts to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas systems.
The subcommittee has developed an Action Plan (PDF, 6 pp., 218 KB, About PDF) to focus on key technologies, market assessment, project financing, country-specific needs, cooperative opportunities, and communication and outreach.

Nodal Analysis Tool
The Nodal Analysis Tool displays interactive flow diagrams of the oil and gas industry. The goal of the Nodal Analysis tool is to give users easy access to information on cost-effective technologies and practices that reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas industry. The Methane to Markets Partnership would like to acknowledge the Government of Canada for sponsoring this work and the work group that contributed time and resources to facilitate development of the tool.
