Canada

Canada is the world's 13th largest emitter of methane. Approximately 63 percent of its anthropogenic methane emissions—64.4 MTCO2E—come from landfills, natural gas and oil systems, and coal mines.

Experience and Opportunities for Methane Projects

The government of Canada has developed programs and initiatives that have the potential to further advance the development of the landfill gas sector, and in turn, contribute to increased greenhouse gas emission reductions and renewable energy.

  • The Green Municipal Funds support municipal government action to cut pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve quality of life. They are sponsored by the government and offer grants and low-interest loans for innovative environmental infrastructure initiatives that generate measurable environmental, economic, and social benefits. Since the program's inception, a number of municipal solid waste management projects have benefited from the funds.
  • The Renewable Power Production Incentive (RPPI) Program is endowed with $100 million ($US 83 million) to provide an incentive payment of 1 cent ($US 0.8 cents) per kWhr of production for the first 10 years of operation. It will be introduced for eligible projects, such as landfill gas to electricity projects, commissioned between March 31, 2006, and April 1, 2011.
