Emissions Profiles
Nigeria is the world's 10th largest emitter of methane. Approximately 38 percent of its anthropogenic methane emissions—57.14 MTCO2E—come from landfills, natural gas and oil systems, and coal mines. The majority of the remainder comes from rice cultivation and cattle.

Experience and Opportunities for Methane Projects
The government of Nigeria has partnered with three neighboring countries (Benin, Togo, and Ghana), along with a private-sector consortium and USAID, to establish the West Africa Gas Pipeline, meant to provide natural gas throughout West Africa. Intergovernmental agreements have been signed between the countries, and USAID has helped the private sector in these countries to create market conditions that would attract private-sector investment.
