Emissions Profiles

Poland is the world’s 30th largest emitter of methane. Reducing methane emissions from coal mines is a priority for Poland, and more than half of its remaining anthropogenic methane emissions—23.52 MTCO2E—come from landfills, natural gas and oil systems, and manure management.

Experience and Opportunities for Methane Projects

Poland will contribute its methane utilization experience across all sectors, but particularly coal mines. Approximately 94 percent of Poland’s electricity is produced from coal, including 56 percent from hard coal and the top 20 coal mines account for approximately 90 percent of methane emissions. Taking these conditions into account, Poland has a significant potential to use methane captured in coal mines. Poland’s experience gained through implementing projects in this area will be an important contribution to future international cooperation.

Other Background

Poland GHG emissions have been diminishing since the late 1980s as a result of political and economic transition. Poland still has numerous opportunities to cost-effectively reduce emissions through renewable energy and Poland’s energy law assures free access to the national electric power grid system for renewable energy producers. To help guide development in this area, Poland’s Climate Policy was adopted by the Polish Council of Ministers in November 2003 and submitted to the European Commission in March 2004. The policy sets forth a national strategy for future GHG emission reductions, also including economic and administrative mechanisms and periodical monitoring of its implementation.
