Emissions Profiles
Russia is the world's sixth largest emitter of methane. Approximately 74 percent of its anthropogenic methane emissions—233.0 MTCO2E—come from natural gas and oil systems, landfills, and coal mines.

Experience and Opportunities for Methane Projects
Russia ranks fourth in the world in coal mine methane emissions (behind China, the United States, and Ukraine). Russia is home to at least six coal mine methane recovery and utilization projects. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), with financial support from the U.S. EPA, is actively promoting coal mine methane initiatives in Russia and other former Soviet countries.
Gazprom, a Russian natural gas company, is collaborating with outside sources to reduce leakage from natural gas systems throughout Russia. If fully successful, this effort should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 MMTCO2E.
