Finland joins Methane to Markets Partnership

23 July 2008

Finland is the 26th country to join the Methane to Markets Partnership, increasing the ability of the Partnership to reduce methane emissions by spurring its recovery and use as a clean energy source. Finland is adding its efforts to those of Methane to Market’s 25 other government partners and a Project Network of more than 750 public and private sector organizations.

The Methane to Markets Partnership focuses on four major methane emissions sources: Agriculture (animal waste management), coal mines, landfills, and oil and gas systems. Finland plans to participate in Methane to Markets'technical subcommittees for the landfill and agricultural sectors in order to share their significant expertise as pioneers in biogas and landfill gas technologies. Finland has biogas recovery installations at 33 of its landfills, and provides grants to its farmers who are investing in methane recovery and use projects.
